Thein Soe a été nommé président de la commission électorale de l’Union du Myanmar/de la Birmanie (UEC) le 2 février 2021. En acceptant cette nomination à la suite du coup d’État du 1er février 2021, et de par ses agissements en qualité de président de l’UEC, notamment l’annulation des résultats des élections sans qu’il y ait le moindre élément de preuve avéré de fraude, Thein Soe est directement impliqué dans des actions portant atteinte à la démocratie et à l’état de droit au Myanmar/en Birmanie.

Thein Soe was nominated as chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC) on 2 Feb 2021. By accepting this nomination in the aftermath of the military coup of 1 Feb 2021, and through his actions as chairman of the UEC, notably the cancelling of the results of the elections without any proven evidence of frauds, Thein Soe has been directly involved in actions undermining democracy and the rule of law in Myanmar.

    U Thein Soe was appointed by the Commander-in-Chief as Chair of the, reconstituted, Union Election Commission (UEC) on 3 February 2021, two days after the military seized power in a coup. The Chair of the UEC is responsible for overseeing activity relating to elections in Myanmar and the conduct of political parties. As Chair of the UEC U Thein Soe has been involved in undermining democracy in his attempts to override the democratic wishes of the people of Myanmar at the November 2020 polls, in particular on 27 July 2021 he passed a decree which annulled the November 2020 election results on the unsubstantiated grounds of widespread electoral fraud. Further and/or alternatively he is carrying out activities on behalf of the State Administration Council (designated under the Myanmar (Sanctions) Regulations 2021) and/or Min Aung Hlaing (the Commander-in-Chief and Chairman of the SAC) (designated under the Global Human Rights (Sanctions) Regulations 2020 and Myanmar (Sanctions) Regulations 2021.
